King of Pops Part Deux
Posted on August 31, 2010 · Leave a CommentAbout four months ago to the day I heard about this guy around Atlanta calling himself the King of Pops and was immediately taken aback. This man, not even a year later, was attempting to steal the nickname of one of the greatest performers the world had ever seen. Michael Jackson. Then I realized two things: (1) he was actually using the the name King of (literally) Pops and (2) his pops were mouth watering, mind-blowing, absurdly delicious.
This man, Steven Carse, is the King of Pops and Atlantans are finally beginning to give him the recognition he deserves. He lugs boxes upon boxes of fresh fruit up to his apartment where he makes his delicious pop concoctions of Pineapple Ginger, Strawberry Rhubarb and Hibiscus flavors (amongst others) by hand, everyday. He takes his modest push cart to his newest location, Woodruff Park, from 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and then hits his regular corner (N. Highland & North Ave.) from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. For only $2.50 you can get one of these unique treats! Heck, he could charge $5 for a pop and we’d pay for it because they’re that good.
But, we’re in luck, The King of Pops is a fair liege AND Scoutmob has “scouted out” a deal with the man so that we can get a half off discount on the delicious pops. That’s right, just head to Scoutmob.com, get the deal sent to you in a text message and show up at Woodruff Park and The King will hook you up with a pop for $1.25! But, you better hurry and get the text; there’s only 14 hours left.
And be sure to follow The Popking on Twitter because he’ll let you know where he is or will be on any given day. How many of you Overlook residents have experienced the pops? How many will be giving him a visit sometime soon?

Deal of the Day: $10 Braves Tickets
Posted on August 27, 2010 · Leave a CommentAs we get closer to October the chances of the Braves making the playoffs and possibly the World Series are getting better everyday. In our last seven games we’ve only won 2, but we’ve actually gained a 1/2 game over the second place Philadelphia Phillies. Going into tonight’s game against the Florida Marlins we’re 3 games ahead of the Phils who were swept at home in four games by the subpar Houston Astros.
So, as we venture into the postseason (hopefully) in Bobby Cox’s last season we need to get behind the Bravos in this last month of the season. If you’re with me in supporting the Braves in what’s left of the season then have I got a surprise for you. Discounted tickets!
The Groupon deal of the day is $10 dollar tickets for great seats in the outfield pavilion or $20 for terrace-level seats. Either way you’re saving around 50% on ticket price because the outfield seats are usually $24! The only catch (and it’s really not a catch at all) is that you only have six games to choose from of the 20 remaining home games. Here are the games:
- New York Mets on Tuesday, August 31, at 7:10 p.m.
- New York Mets on Thursday, September 2, at 7:10 p.m.
- St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, September 9, at 7:10 p.m.
- St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, September 12, at 8:05 p.m.
- Washington Nationals on Tuesday, September 14, at 7:10 p.m.
- Florida Marlins on Tuesday, September 28, at 7:10 p.m.
You have about a day and a half left to get your half off tickets, so hurry and don’t be a procrastinator like me! Any of you residents at The Overlook plan on going? Let me know and I’ll stop by your seats!
Dalí at The High
Posted on August 25, 2010 · Leave a CommentEclectic paintings from an eccentric mind. That is how you can describe the strange but fascinating work of Salvador Dali. Dali’s surrealist paintings and images put the viewers in another place and time, and where the mysticism takes you is only limited by your imagination. It is a psychological mind trip into the human psyche without the use of illegal substances.
Dali’s late work, after 1940, gave way to new collaborations with photographers and new rising artist of the 60’s and 70’s fame. Some of the many artists Dali worked with include de Kooning, Lichtenstein, and Warhol.
The late work of Salvador Dali is on display at The High Museum of Art from August – January. The High Museum of Art is located on the corner of Peachtree Street and 16th Street. The Overlook at Lindbergh is a 10 min. ride to the museum and conveniently located right off MARTA at Art Center Station, so residents are encouraged to get out and walk (if weather permits).

Atlanta Half/off
Posted on August 19, 2010 · Leave a CommentAnytime you can get a percentage off of a meal or pretty much anything, it’s a good day! And I don’t mean you get it free because you found a hair or two in your meal or you get a can good half off because it’s dented. I’m talking legitimate means of discounts and to good restaurants! Well, I’ve found (with the help of the Ryan Report) the perfect way to get half off meals, adventure rafting, grooming centers, day spas and many, many more!
I was driving home the other evening listening to a radio segment on local station, V-103, called the Ryan Report. VJ Ryan Cameron was talking about his weekend and how he took his entire family (3 kids, his wife and himself) out to eat at Two Urban Licks for just $50. And he said they got appetizers, entrees and desserts! How’d he do it? Atlanta Half/off.
Everything on their website is half off. All you have to do is buy the deal for $50 and you get a certificate for $100. That simple. Do you have a date night coming up? Atlanta Half/off is perfect! And they have restaurants for everyone’s palette–Spice Market, Creole Nouvelle, Eclipse di Luna, Taste of Honey, etc. I highly suggest you take the time out to visit Atlanta Half/off and check out their deals because there is something for everyone at The Overlook.
New Home for the Ballet
Posted on August 13, 2010 · Leave a CommentAfter spending 15 years in its previous home on West Peachtree Street, the Atlanta Ballet has found a new home befitting of a ballet. The new space is nearly two times the size of the Midtown dwelling and features five full-size dance studios, a physical therapy suite, student library, costume shop, dressing rooms for the professional company and students, scenery storage, box office and boutique.
Home to the ballet, The Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre, was constructed and designed using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, becoming the country’s first arts headquarters to achieve L.E.E.D. gold certification. That’s a huge accomplishment. Kudos!
The Grand Opening of the facility will be held this weekend and is open to any and everyone. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will commence at 10:30 a.m. on Sturday, August 14th with Mayor Kasim Reed. An Open House will begin after at 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and will continue on Sunday, August 15th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Atlanta Ballet’s new home is located at 1695 Marietta Blvd. N.W. in Atlanta, well more like Vinings, so come show your face this weekend and celebrate this joyous occasion.

N.E.R.D. for Free?
Posted on August 9, 2010 · Leave a CommentWho likes free? I do, especially when it’s a free concert of one of my favorite groups. Pharrell Williams led group N. E. R. D. will be in Atlanta this Saturday, August 14th for a free concert at the inaugural CuervoGames at Centennial Park. The group was supposed to be a surprise, but I heard they would be here on the radio last week and have since confirmed it. So, I’ll be at Centennial Park this weekend Hot-N-Fun!
A little more on the CuervoGames that I mentioned earlier; it’s a FREE event for adults 21+ that will feature a grueling American Gladiators-style competition, food, music and more–N.E.R.D. Though it’s too late to sign for a guaranteed spot in the competition, you can show up early and sign up as a “walk-on team.” If you win against the other “walk-ons,” you’ll go up against the 3 Facebook winners. The winner of the four will be sent to Las Vegas to take on the winning teams from seven other cities. Sounds fun.
I don’t know if I’ll compete, I just know I’ll be there to see N.E.R.D. I haven’t seen them since On the Rocks at Stone Mountain back in the day–about 8 years ago! Man, I’m getting old.

Groupon: The Laughing Skull
Posted on August 5, 2010 · Leave a CommentEver been to the Vortex Bar & Grill in Midtown? Yes, in Midtown, not the one in Little Five. If you have then you should know about The Laughing Skull amongst other things, like the fact that the Double Bypass Burger is absurdly ridiculous. So much so that it’s been featured on the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food! But wait, I’m getting a head of myself here; let’s get back to The Laughing Skull!
Formerly known as the Peachtree Playhouse, the Skull has played host to so many phenomenal acts and plays it should be a city landmark! It was home to Atlanta’s longest running play, Peachtree Battle, which opened back in 2001 and ran for seven years straight before going on hiatus. The lounge always features a load of comedians to check out as well as comedy open mics on a regular basis for all those aspiring comedians.
If you’ve never been to the Laughing Skull then you need to get there as soon as possible. And use this Groupon for a $10 ticket to any show (no special events though) through Halloween of this year. There are only 8 hours 38 minutes left, so you better hurry up!
And Overlook you’re literally 15 minutes away from the Skull (with traffic), so get there. You don’t know what you’re missing!

Yumbii–It Can Do Most Anything!
Posted on August 3, 2010 · Leave a CommentI’ve walked outside in the middle of Atlanta more times than I can count to find awesome, delicious food carts ready and waiting for my order. Serving all kinds of foods from hamburgers with Golfish to freshly sliced Gyros, they’re everywhere! And I love them!
But, they’re no longer confined to one spot in Atlanta. Well, at least one mobile food truck isn’t. The Yumbii taco truck was the first to be approved by the City of Atlanta Police Department to vend anywhere on the streets of Atlanta. If a company wants Yumbii to set up shop in their parking lot for a special Yumbii lunch, Yumbii can do it! As of now, they’re the only one permitted to do so.
So, is this the beginning of something new in Atlanta? You bet! Kings of Pops is next and I can’t wait!
